About the artist

Between Klezmer, Jazz and World Music

Maximilian Kreuzer initially received a thorough classical training on the double bass before turning his attention to jazz at the age of 15. His time at the Music Grammar School in Graz proved artistically formative, introducing him to fellow musicians with whom he continues to collaborate closely. This period gave rise to ensembles including the Quetschklampfa quartet and the Moritz Weiß Klezmer Trio, both of which have performed successfully in Austria and internationally.

From 2017 to 2025, he studied double bass with Professor Morten Ramsbøl at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. During his studies, he was inspired by numerous masterclasses and artistic encounters with musicians such as Renaud Garcia-Fons, Jim McNeely, Joe Sanders and Georg Breinschmid. These collaborations broadened his stylistic range and sonic horizons, spanning jazz, world music and improvisation.

Alongside his concert work, Kreuzer regularly performs with the band Die Tanzspielerei at weddings and balls. In 2021, he founded the Max Kreuzer Ensemble to bring his own musical concepts to life. He also performs with groups including the Styrian Klezmore Orchestra, the OST Styrian Rhythm Section and Esther, exploring a rich musical landscape ranging from klezmer and world music to jazz and contemporary grooves.

Since 2019, he has also been active as a cultural organiser in Styria. As co-founder and programme curator of Graz's folk.art world music festival and a board member of the Styrian Klezmore association, he helps foster a vibrant musical scene that transcends genres.

In addition to the double bass, Kreuzer plays electric bass, tuba and hurdy-gurdy. Since 2023, he has taught bass at the Heiligenkreuz am Waasen Music School, passing on his musical knowledge and experience to the next generation.
