Thomas Höft works as a writer, director and dramaturge in very different fields of art. He is responsible for major historical thematic exhibitions in German and Austrian museums and writes non-fiction books - for „Welt aus Eisen“ (“Shiny shapes”) he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Book Art. Above all, he has become known for his numerous plays and opera librettos for the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Bregenz Festival. So far the highlight of 2010 was the premiere of Thomas Höft's opera "Pünktchen und Anton" after Erich Kästner to the music of Iván Eröd at the Vienna State Opera. Introduced by Götz Friedrich to the world of music theater directing this field became a steadily increasing focus in Thomas Höft's oeuvre.
Since 1994 Thomas Höft works as a dramaturge of the Festival styriarte Graz, which was founded for Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Since 2003 he is also a dramaturge of the Easter Festival Psalm Graz. He was also director of the Brandenburg Theater, the application of Augsburg for European Capital of Culture and the Pax2005 anniversary year for the anniversary of the Augsburg religious peace. From 2012 to 2018 he was director of the Cologne Center for Early Music (ZAMUS) and Artistic Director of the Cologne Festival of Early Music. He was co-founder of the collective ĀRT HOUSE und ĀRT HOUSE OPERA. In 2018 and 2019 he was responsible for the dramaturgy of the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci. As the founder and CEO of the Cologne-based Offenbach society, Thomas Höft was instrumental in the preparation of the great Offenbach anniversary in 2019. As co-curator he instructed the Utrecht Festival of Early Music 2019, the largest early-music-festival in the world. In 2020 he was co-founder of the festival KlosterKlaenge.
