In a tender soundscape of voices, strings and accordion, the quintet
Alma
gives new life to old songs for the quietest season of the year, letting their music unfold through the
Minoritensaal
at Christmas.
In ALMA’s music, one senses not only the ensemble’s engagement with tradition but also a constant effort to translate that tradition into the present day. For the quietest time of the year, the musicians have developed a programme born of silence. They researched folk song archives and drew inspiration from both contemporary music and the aesthetics of early sound. They composed and arranged and the result was Cherubim, no commonplace Christmas programme but an invitation to embrace the silence.
Rooted in their cultural heritage and propelled by their creative vision, these five musical innovators continually explore new ways of bringing folk music into dialogue with the refined sound of classical chamber music. Since their debut in 2013, the Viennese quintet, led by violinist Julia Lacherstorfer, has received invitations to perform across the globe, from Scandinavia to Peru.
