Content

the light of Roman Baroque

Rome, 1638: a lutenist from Orléans dedicates a book of lute music to a prince in Graz. This historic meeting between Pierre Gaultier and Prince Johann Anton I of Eggenberg is the inspiration for today’s king of the lute, Hopkinson Smith, and his evening of atmospheric music in Eggenberg Palace. The principal witnesses at the meeting back then were Pope Urban VIII and his court lutenist Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger. The lute works in the Planet Hall are bathed in the light of Roman Baroque.

Hopkinson Smith

Renaissance lute

The Swiss-American lutenist has long been considered a benchmark for English Renaissance music. After studying music at Harvard, Hopkinson Smith focused on the solo repertoire for early plucked instruments and was a founding member of Jordi Savall's ensemble Hespèrion XX, which is also an always welcome guest at the Styriarte.
