In 2025 Eggenberg Palace celebrates the commencement of its construction 400 years ago with a large-scale special exhibition as part of Showing Styria (Steiermark Schau) 2025.
In a “festival within a festival” the Styriarte is also presenting the fascinating palace and its builders, the princes of Eggenberg, with a special anniversary gift: the abundant treasure that is its very own music, worthy of note to this day. For the Eggenbergs were patrons of great composers; first-rate musicians played at their court and musical history was even written here: Heinrich Schütz dedicated his Cantiones sacrae to Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg and Pierre Gaultier wrote his famous lute book for Johann Anton von Eggenberg. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber achieved his first success with the Eggenberg court orchestra, and a pupil of the court Kapellmeister Pignatta, who went by the name of Il Pignattino, became a world-famous castrato. Last but not least, Antonio Draghi wrote his opera Gl’incantesimi disciolti (Spells Dispelled) for the wedding of Leopold I and Claudia Felicitas of Austria, which took place in Graz and Claudia Felicitas resided at Eggenberg Palace during her stay …
