Singer Gabrielle Aiello

Born in Rome, the specialist for southern Italian vocal techniques first occupied herself with classical singing before turning to jazz music and participating in various orchestral projects. As a singer, musician and dancer, her main interest for many years has been world music with its magical vocalisms and different languages.

Specialist for southern Italian singing techniques

Gabriella Aiello was born in Rome, where she grew up as a singer, dancer and musician. She first studied classical vocal techniques before turning to jazz music and participating in various orchestral projects, while also furthering her education in jazz dance.

Her main interest for many years has been world music with its magical vocalisms and different languages. Meeting Italian artists such as Giovanna Marini (a famous ethnomusicologist and founder of schools in Italy and France) drew Gabriella's attention to the study of traditional Italian culture with its ancient folk songs, music and dances. She studied overtones with Roberto Laneri and participated in his overtone singing ensemble "In Forma di Cristalli".

Gabriella as a lead singer and dancer with various groups and has long performed southern Italian folk music such as "Tamburi del Vesuvio" at multi-ethnic festivals throughout Europe. To deepen this kind of music and dance, she also studied playing the frame drum.

Her musical partners include artists such as Patrick Valliant, Riccardo Tesi, Arnaldo Vacca, Andrea Piccioni, Nisia and Stefano Saletti.

A project with harpist Giuliana De Donno is dedicated to the traditional songs of the countries by the sea.

Gabriella Aiello currently sings in the ensemble Oni Wytars, which offers a mixture of traditional and ancient music. She also sings with the Sardinian artists Mauro Palmas and Elena Ledda.
