Content

from Mozart to Gershwin

In Imperial Vienna the hypocrisy at Court and the bigotry of the Church drove the intellectuals to the Masonic lodges. Mozart wrote his most beautiful music for these seekers after truth: solemn adagios for clarinets, Freemason cantatas full of the pathos of truth, and the songs in “The Magic Flute”. The Vienna Clarinet Connection transforms Sarastro and co. into a playful “Freemason ceremony”, ending up with jazz, which of course takes a sceptical view of the great truths of the past: “It ainʼt necessarily so”.
