The young star conductor
Nil Venditti
impresses us with Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and the fast-paced Sports Show Suite by Shostakovich's favourite student
Galina Ustwolskaja.
Content
Heavy exercise for the orchestra:
when Nil Venditti conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, all sections tap into unimagined reserves of strength. In her early 30s, the Perugia conductor is already peaking in her career. In Galina Ustvolskaya’s Suite she also shows her athletic prowess. In just eleven minutes, nine sports rush past the audience, shrill and speedy, in a manner quite unexpected for Shostakovich’s favourite otherworldly student.

Recreation is special in many ways: consisting of musicians whose nationalities range from Japan to Venezuela, most of the members received part of their training in Graz. After its formation in 2002, the collective has played in unique halls such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt and has worked with outstanding conductors.
Nil Verditti, a celebrated representative of a new generation of women on the podium, breaks down seemingly insurmountable barriers with fervent energy. The Swiss-educated daughter of a Turkish mother and a Roman father, she weaves together the musical languages of the South and the North, the audience and the orchestra, the great standard works and the world premieres. In the 2024/25 season, she will be the first guest conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia in Newcastle upon Tyne.
