Graz too had its “Farinelli”:
Eggenberg court Kapellmeister Pietro Romolo Pignatta took the castrato “Pignattino” under his wing when he came to the court of the Princes of Eggenberg and his career started in the Planet Hall. He was later to deliver brilliant performances in Alessandro Scarlatti’s operas the length and breadth of Italy, from Naples to Venice. Lorenz Duftschmid tells the story of the life of the famous castrato from Eggenberg in the Planet Hall, where it all began. Valer Sabadus sings Scarlatti’s most beautiful arias for Pignattino – gallant love songs, lively minuets, deeply melancholic laments.
