the victory of light over darkness
“And God said, ‘Let there be light!’ And there was ... light!!” Ever since the most powerful C major chord in music history hit the Viennese audience at its premiere, Haydn’s Creation has told again and again the timeless story of the victory of light over darkness. The greatest oratorio of the Viennese Classical period is not a naïve illustration of the story of creation, but a testament to the Enlightenment. When it is handled as dramatically as Patrick Hahn performs it with the Festival Orchestra and the Camerata Styria, there can be no doubt about the message of Haydn’s music.
