Bruckner was never nearer to the threefold exaltation of the heavenly hosts as in his Mass in E Minor. Palestrina, the Romantic and eternity merge in his marvellous contrapuntal lines, accompanied by the majestic sound of the wind instruments. In Bruckner Year 2024 Erwin Ortner and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir present their interpretation of this masterpiece, which they have refined over the years. But first they pay tribute to the intimacy of Franz Schubert with the German Mass, to which those in the audience who so wish may sing along.

The differentiation and plasticity with which Erwin Ortner's hand-picked ensemble of voices realises choral works from all epochs is unrivalled. The Arnold Schoenberg Choir, founded in 1972 and a regular guest at the Styriarte festival for decades, has won countless prizes - including the Grammy in 2002 for a St Matthew Passion under Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

The orchestral "supergroup" of the House of Styriarte is made up of changing international guest and musicians from the first-class pool of the Graz-based orchestra Recreation, depending on the occasion. The orchestra's tuning and choice of instruments follow the respective historical requirements of the works performed.

The doyen of Austrian choral music has been closely associated with the Styriarte festival for decades - also thanks to the congenial, "Grammy"- and "Echo"-award-winning collaboration of his Arnold Schoenberg Choir with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Erwin Ortner is also Hofkapellmeister in Vienna and was the rector of the Vienna University of Music for many years.
