Stat felix domus Austriae

Shows

On a walk through the Grazer Stadtkrone, we immerse ourselves in over 400 years of refined musical beauty from the glorious era of the Graz Castle under Archduke Karl II.

Content

A celebration for Archduke Charles II at his castle

When Archduke Charles II died in Graz in 1590 at the young age of 50, he left his eldest son a well-ordered society, a flourishing court culture, and a court orchestra shaped by Italian musicians. Archduke Ferdinand would later take all of this with him to Vienna as Emperor, but under his father, Graz remained firmly at the centre of all innovations. Styriarte recounts this most glorious chapter in the history of Graz Castle at the very site of the events, with a wonderful panorama of songs, dance music and readings, sacred works, and secular revelry.

Programme

A celebration for Archduke Karl II at his castle on the Grazer Stadtkrone (Baroque hall, Castle Garden, Cathedral, Old University) with music by Johannes de Cleve, Annibale Padovano, Francesco Rovigo, Orlando di Lasso, and others.

Ensemble

Shawm, tabor and dulcian: the colourful variety of sounds that shaped everyday life 500 years ago is dusted off by the virtuoso bridge builders and poured into entertaining concert events.
