Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg variations, BWV 988
“Aria in 30 variations” – this is how Bach described his “Goldberg Variations” with unparalleled understatement. 30 variations accompanying the same bass, every third one a canon, rising from the supertonic to the dominant, and in-between a kaleidoscope of baroque dance rhythms and expressions. Almost every pianist since Glenn Gould has taken the opportunity to bring this architecture into a concert hall. Pierre-Laurent Aimard takes his turn at the grand Steinway piano at the Stefaniensaal. With his exceptional striking technique, he unveils a 21st-century view on the adaptability of the grand Bach.
Pre-concert talk at 7.15 pm at Stefaniensaal. Admission free.
