Boundless Enthusiasm

Welche jungen Orchestermusiker:innen träumen nicht davon, einmal Mahlers Zweite Symphonie aufzuführen? Die Styriarte macht’s möglich: Vom wuchtigen Anfang bis zum ekstatischen Schluss, vom kindlichen Gottvertrauen des „Urlichts“ bis zur letzten Übersteigerung im „Auferstehn!“ kennt diese Musik keine Grenzen der Begeisterung. Mei-Ann Chen hat es in der Hand, das Styriarte Youth Orchestra zu einem neuen, ungeahnten Höhenflug zu inspirieren und das Festival in seinem Schlüsselstück zum Höhepunkt zu führen.

Soprano

Miriam Kutrowatz

The freshness and expressiveness of her singing, combined with great acting skills, predestine the young Viennese for opera. She made her debut as Zerlina in 'Don Giovanni in Nöten' at the Styriarte, followed by Vivaldi's 'Magnificat' and Handel's 'Alexander's Feast'. In the 2022/23 season, she will make her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Mozart's Papagena and most recently appeared at the Zurich Opera in Handel's Serse.

Mezzo-Soprano

Maria Hegele

The German mezzo-soprano Maria Hegele is a regular guest at the Volksoper Wien and has most recently performed at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, the Staatsoper Berlin and the Bregenz Festival. Her concert appearances have taken her to venues including the Gasteig, the Herkulessaal and Müpa Budapest. In 2025, she won second prize at the International Haydn Competition.

chor pro musica graz

With its rich variety of voices and experience, the mixed choir founded in 1979 has become an integral part of Styriarte. Directed by Gerd Kenda, the ensemble’s core repertoire consists of large-scale choral works from the 19th and 20th centuries, though it has also enjoyed some truly memorable moments with Baroque and Classical oratorios.

Gerd Kenda

Sein spezielles Händchen für wundervolle Chorereignisse ist im Hause styriarte ebenso bekannt wie seine markante Bassstimme: Der gebürtige Kärntner Gerd Kenda ist seit den 1980ern einer der präsentesten Protagonisten in der Grazer Gesangsszene. Seit 1985 leitet er den chor pro musica, der einer unserer Lieblingspartner für groß besetzte Vokalpartien ist.

Mondo musicale has stood for musical diversity and the joy of singing since its founding in 1995. Established by Markus Zwitter and led by Miriam Ahrer since 2022, the approximately 50-member choir performs varied programmes ranging from a cappella works to major choral compositions and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025.

Miriam Ahrer

Styrian-born Miriam Ahrer is an award-winning conductor. After studying in Graz, she has been leading choirs and ensembles since 2004, and has also directed mondo musicale since 2022. She is in international demand, active in music education, and strongly committed to the Styrian choral scene.

Orchestra

Styriarte Youth Orchestra

A symphony orchestra of highly qualified and enthusiastic young musicians: that's what Andrés Orozco-Estrada wanted from the Styriarte in 2021 - and that's what he got. Mei-Ann Chen is now taking this orchestra under her wing for the fourth year. The members of the Styriarte Youth Orchestra come from many different countries around the world and work on their programme in an orchestra camp lasting just under a week.

Mei-Ann Chen

Born in Taiwan, Mei-Ann Chen has lived in the US since 1989 and holds a doctorate in music (conducting) and a master’s degree in violin performance. One of America’s most promising young conductors, she was the first woman to win the Malko International Conductors Competition and has been appointed chief conductor of Recreation Graz beginning fall 2021.
